At our Cedarbrook Montessori Academy, we believe that play is not simply an interlude in between work sessions: it is part of learning itself! Our halls were filled with even more laughter and creativity than usual as we celebrated Play-Based Learning Day Watching our early learners experience their Montessori style during this event illustrated just how essential unstructured, imaginative, and sensory activities are for development we welcome you inside our classrooms and playground to witness it for yourselves.
The Morning Circle: Opening Up Space for Creativity and Innovation
Today we discussed what it means to play with purpose, even our youngest students understood this was about trying new things and working as a group. To set an exciting and inspiring atmosphere until pickup time. we sang songs about creating, building and dreaming while singing along! We sang songs about building, dreaming and dreaming to keep everyone’s imagination running wild all afternoon long
Water and Sand Zone
Our children learned volumes without even realizing it with water tables filled with bubbles, funnels, measuring cups and funnels that taught volumetric measurements without ever knowing. One student exclaimed in amazement as a wheel poured water out quickly! Next door stood our popular Kinetic Sand station where children formed shapes while sensing its gritty yet soft texture developing fine motor skills as they squeezed and shaped it to build upon shapes they created through molding with this sticky texture sand station.
We brought nature in through an indoor Nature Texture Table. Montessori Daycare Children sorted these objects based on texture; rough versus smooth were among their choices for classification. This activity provided invaluable language development as children described what they felt while sorting.
Building Big Ideas
Building is at the core of Play-Based Learning Day! Collaboration we observed was truly impressive. A group of older students decided to construct a “castle for their class pet.” Negotiations was necessary between participants about who would build what, as walls began falling down unexpectedly; problem solving together helped strengthen its foundation despite structural failures that required reinforcement to create something stronger than previously anticipated. Not just stacking blocks; this activity served as an early introduction into engineering and teamwork.
Outdoor Adventures: Gross Motor Skills in Action
After enjoying a healthy lunch, our celebration continued outdoors where students participated in obstacle courses designed to test their balance and coordination.
At our outdoor party we set up an inflatable “river” made of blue fabric for them to jump over, as well as a balance beam made out of low wooden plank. They ran, jumped and climbed alongside one another as we cheered them along with parachute games that required listening and moving in sync in order for balls bouncing on top of fabric to remain suspended within it.
Art Without Boundaries
Back inside the art studio was buzzing with activity for Play-Based Learning Day: we took away any predetermined restrictions or templates that needed coloring; instead providing large sheets of paper, paints, clay tools and collage materials instead.
Instruction was simple: “Create What You Feel.” This opened-ended art session fostered creativity and self-expression through finger painting or mixing colors together to explore new shades, Throughout each step of their creative journeys they found that sometimes process is far more important than product This open-ended art session fostered creativity, self-expression and demonstrated why creativity should always take priority over product!
Why Play-Based Learning Is Important
Retracing our steps through this day reveals why this approach to learning is at the core of our philosophy: When children play, they’re fully immersed in an immersive learning experience without concern about making mistakes; their focus remains solely on experimentation. At Play-Based Learning Day event this day we saw:
Problem-Solving: Figuring out ways to balance blocks.
Social Skills: Negotiating roles within an imaginary clinic. Longevity Skills: Describing textures and telling tales through descriptive language skills.
Physical Development: Running, grasping and balancing.
At our Montessori academy, these interactions become part of daily routine. However, dedicating an entire day to celebrating them reminded both teachers and children alike the joy of childhood discovery.
Bringing the Fun Home
Return of Fun Our day culminated with a closing circle where children shared their favorite parts were shouted with enthusiasm as children shared memories from their day of learning. Thank you for trusting Montessori in Ajax with your early learners We can’t wait for our next day of discovery.
